Description
Mongolians have developed and used in their lives traditional methods of processing animal hide and skin. For example, there are techniques of salting and drying a hide (salting the wet hide with 15-20% salt of its own weight), drying and shaving (soaking the dried hide, applying yogurt, salt, crushed liver of animals, etc., by hand, and storing in a wooden barrel or plastic container), plucking (soaking the hair in water for a while to loosen it), shaving (freezing the hide and shaving the hair), and tanning (by hand or using a cleaver). There are two types of tanning: soaked tanning and bulk tanning. Soaked tanning is a method of dipping in water with salt and curds and kneading to soften it. Bulk tanning is the process of softening the skin immediately after it is removed from the animal. Herders traditionally process sheepskin, goat, and lamb skins into deels (traditional dress), hats, and large cattle skin used for leather straps, saddles, shoelaces, khukhuur (leather sack for fermenting milk), leather bags, purses, and other more than 60 types of products used for daily necessities for nomadic life. Of these, the leather strap products have a special role to play, as leather strap products are used to make the most necessary things for nomadic life, such as bridles, halters, lassos, harnesses, and ropes for packing and carrying loads and fastening equipment. The heritage element “Traditional technique of processing skin and hide” was registered in the ”Traditional methods and techniques” domain of the National Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Mongolia.
