Description
The development of the dressmaking culture of the ancestors of the Tajiks is evidenced by the monuments of antiquity (petroglyphs) and the Middle Ages, the New Age, in which the female body was always hidden under clothing, under a veil. Traditional clothing served as a symbol of a ritual ceremony, age, sex, family and gender socialization, social, professional, religious, and national definitions, as well as an expression of folk aesthetics and artistic tastes.
A number of researchers highlight the following functions of folk costume. First of all, the magical function, when the costume fulfills a certain purpose or embodies an image in the process of a ritual action, as well as the age function, when the costume indicates the age characteristics of its owner. In addition, the traditional costume reflects the socio-sexual affiliation of its owner (gender and marital status), as well as his social status, professional activity, and origin (region, country). A special place is occupied by religious regulation of the costume complex, according to which it is possible to determine not only the individual's affiliation with a particular confession but also his position in its service hierarchy. And, finally, the folk costume fully expresses the aesthetic ideas of society about folk beauty, its ideals.
