Description
The article tells about the traditional craft of making clay toys and its development in the context of linking modern and traditional art.
Making figures of fantastic dragons, animal toys, and whistles with clay is called A’jubasozi, which is a part of pottery. In the past, people had some beliefs related to these figures and put them in the rooms for defending against evil eyes.
The author focuses on the stages of change in this branch of applied art. In addition, the links between clay toys of the pre-Islamic period and 20th-century examples are considered. The author notes that despite the existing difficulties, this craft of the Tajik people has managed to preserve centuries-old traditions. Among the factors hindering the development of this branch of folk craft, problems with the acquisition of materials and the sale of finished products are indicated.
The author also pays attention to the contemporary situation of the traditional craft of making clay toys in Dushanbe city by master Suhrob Saidov and in Istaravshan by Ergashboy Ghafurov.
