Embroidery is one of the traditional applied arts of Tajiks, which is also popular among many peoples of the world due to its local and ethnic characteristics. This is an exquisite art with a long history, reflecting the inner world of the artist, traditional knowledge, beliefs, and aspirations of ordinary people, including in Tajik culture. In Tajikistan, embroidery is usually used to decorate bedspreads, bridal chadors, pillows, blankets, suzani or wall fabric embroidery, dresses, skullcaps, scarves, cradle covers, curtains, towels, prayer rugs, and several other things.
In embroidery products, symbolic images and mythological ornaments about the nature of the environment and space express the hopes and aspirations of people. Each pattern embroidered on the fabric has its own name and meaning: for example, the sun, the flower of the bowl (kosagul), pomegranate flower, willow leaf, almond, poppy, basil, cockscomb, nightingale, peacock tail, moon and stars, dragon flower, etc. In terms of the scope of themes and the range of expression, the art of embroidery has more space for expression than other types of fine art.
In general, embroidery is an art of women only a small number of men are engaged in this craft. Women and girls are engaged in embroidery individually and together. They gather in craft centers and workshops, in each other's homes, and each embroiders her own product. They ask each other for advice, teach the younger generation the knowledge and art of embroidery, and sometimes, if the size of the product is large, for example, if it is a chador or a veil, they embroider it together. The book “Tajik Embroidery Universe” was developed and published to better present the Tajik art of embroidery at the international level. The book consists of a preface, four chapters, and brief literature the content of the chapters describes the history of the art of embroidery, the style and methods of embroidery in Tajikistan, embroidery products and symbols, as well as the meaning of ornaments. The book is dedicated to the years 2019-2021: "Rural Development, Tourism, and Folk Crafts.". The book contains more than 80 photographs that clearly reflect the traditional details and color symbols of embroidery among Tajiks.
