Description
The first encyclopedia article to consider introduced forms of music and commercial recordings. After a very brief introduction to traditional forms, consideration is given to forms arising from contact with foreigners through history, from the very beginnings of such contact to more recent ones. It is of considerable importance in discussing the development of guitar-based ensembles, the impact of World War II, schools, choirs, "cup-tea signings," military bands, and also the recording of PNG music by researchers. Much of the research is the author's own, rather than relying upon other printed sources.
