Description
Focusing on the cultures of the Highlands region in the center of PNG, the authors consider courting songs, associated dances, folk tales, and other narratives, ballads, body decoration, female spirits, and initiation. These notions are examined to present a contrast to the rather negative, stereotypic image that has often been presented and repeated about such groups. The result is a more positive view of gendered relations in these societies, taking into fuller consideration the nuanced expressiveness and ingenuity of Highlands peoples.
