Description
An anthology of fables, representing the first publication in the language of Takū, a Polynesian outlier situated off the east coast of Bougainville. Its small size and remoteness have left it mostly untouched by Western influences. The population of 450 continues many traditional practices long obsolete on neighboring atolls and within Polynesia itself. Takū's oral tradition includes a category of fables (kkai) told principally for domestic entertainment in a family setting. These stories include one or more short songs which the narrator sings at crucial moments in the plots. The anthology represents the contemporary repertoire. All kkai are presented in Takū on one page and in English translation on the facing page.
