Description
The story of the Sanugma band, which formed in the 1970s and 1980s. Although from diverse backgrounds, they were united to create a sound that represented the birth of a new, sovereign, and distinctly Melanesian nation and to express their values, identities, and cosmology through their music and performance. The author argues that their music was a vital form in sync with the socio-political change then taking place in PNG. Drawing from rock, jazz, and world-music influences, Sanguma reached audiences around the world.
