Description
People "make" the world through physical manipulation and ideational construction. Humans shape, change, and manipulate the material world. But less obvious are how objects in turn shape human existence. This research investigates how the slit-drum (garamut, Tok Pisin), imbued with power and agency, affects some groups of people in PNG. Such instruments are indelibly linked to their prosperity as a people, giving them collective and individual identity. The author explores how such instruments have a social influence on people's lives and how they are also keeping abreast with new changes as a result of colonization. Although widely applicable, this study is focused on garamut culture in Kayan village in Madang province.
