Description
A transcription of an interview by Apisai Enos with composer Turan, concerning the composition of music and dance (abuai na malagene) in the Tolai area of East New Britain. Turan discusses various schools called buai (betelnut), such as those concerned with music and dance, but also with witchcraft, sorcery, and trance. He talks about his initiation into such a school and the acquisition of knowledge to compose and choreograph dances. This article is also significant since it shows how people talk about what is often felt to be a secret subject. Yet Turan reveals certain things, withholds others, and alludes to still others that are only fully understood by those initiated in such traditions.
